Legal Online Poker in America gets another push
This week being National Poker Week seems to have given poker players even more determination to fight for the right to play the game they love. Many dedicated but extremely unhappy poker players have descended upon Capitol Hill to argue their case against the federal regulation of online poker.
The Poker Players Alliance are arguing that poker should not be classified in the same way as other forms of gambling. The alliance are saying that poker is different to other forms of gambling, e.g slot machines and roulette, as they rely purely on luck.
In comparison poker is a game of skill and strategy that involves complex skill calculation. The fact that the cards are dealt is the only real element of chance. After the deal, poker rewards players who utilize learning and analytical skills.
So far the poker lobby has been gaining significant support on capitol Hill. One of the biggest supporters being Barney Frank, house financial services committee chairman and sponsor of the legislation, is pushing forward to change the legislation.
The main opposers of poker and gambling, are conservatives who worry about the morality of gambling and the effects they think it has on family and society. This could be said to be true about about a number of things legally available to the general public, so why single out poker and gambling.

One of the biggest feathers in the Poker Players Alliance hat, is the fact that the U.S. poker market is worth approximately $1.5 billion. In the current global credit crisis, can congress really afford to pass on such a lucrative source of tax revenue.
Just to show there is a fun side to poker, the Poker Players Alliance held a charity tournament earlier this week, involving both professional poker players and the lawmakers themselves.
It will be interesting to see what becomes of Barney Franks bill and the online gaming issue in America, but we will have to wait until September as the bill has been pushed back till then.
